Presence: Contemporary Worship in the Local Church

The church needs more than just song leaders and good musicians. It needs lead worshipers, people of humility and character who can facilitate passionate and purposeful worship experiences that consistently draw a congregation close to God

Presence is a course designed to equip worship teams to effectively lead contemporary worship in a local church setting. It will enable participants to:

  • Think biblically about worship
  • Build the character of a lead worshiper
  • Learn the relational dynamics of being part of a team
  • Engage in fresh, relevant expressions of worship
  • Refine practical skills

Presence is an initiative that brings together Taylor University's tradition of academic excellence with Heartland Church's 20-year track record of training and raising up lead worshipers. The course is designed for worship leaders, musicians, singers, artists, pastors, and those wanting to grow in a deeper experience and understanding of worship. Presence will consist of four weekend modules offered February through May 2007, taught by international and local lead worshipers that can be taken through Taylor University Fort Wayne for college credit.

1 Sep 5-6, 2008:
A Theology of Worship

Taught by Heartland lead worshipers Benjamin Sternke and Andrew Booth. What worship is. What worship does. What worship looks like. Why worship matters.

Benjamin Sternke
Benjamin oversees the worship community of musicians, dancers, and artists at Heartland Church. He has been leading worship for over fifteen years in a wide variety of settings. He is a prolific blogger and teacher and is a graduate of Taylor University. Check out his blog.
2 Oct 3-4, 2008:
The Heart of a Lead Worshiper

Taught by UK Worship leader Geraldine Latty. Lessons learned from 20 years of worship music ministry: staying full of love and zeal for God; dealing with the frustrations of leading a church in worship; character issues; servant leadership; maintaining pure motivation; avoiding competition with other musicians; trusting God for your role of ministry; dealing with difficult people situations.

Geraldine Latty
Geraldine Latty has worked as head of music for a high school in the UK. She has led worship at some of the largest Christian conferences in Europe and has spoken on worship in countries across the world including Australia, New Zealand and Canada. She has appeared on the BBC, and has led community gospel choirs.
3 Oct 31-Nov 1, 2008:
The Skills of a Lead Worshiper

Taught by Heartland lead worshipers Benjamin Sternke and Andrew Booth. Planning services practically and theologically. Choosing songs, readings, liturgies and responses with intention. Balancing spontaneity and structure. Building a team. Working with senior pastors and other leaders. Understanding the technologies of contemporary worship.

Andrew Booth
Andrew was raised in the UK, and has been involved in leading worship for twenty years. Andrew speaks on the subject of worship internationally. He has composed music for video, TV, and radio. He is a graduate of Taylor University and is a Ministry Coach at Heartland Church.
4 Nov 21-22, 2008:
Worship, Creativity and Postmodernity

Taught by UK lead worshiper, songwriter, and author Sue Rinaldi. Creating immersive, multi-sensory worship environments. Drawing from ancient liturgies, diverse art forms, emerging ideas, and new technologies to create worship experiences that resonate deeply with people today. This module includes a special Sunday evening interactive worship environment.

Sue Rinaldi
Sue leads worship throughout the world and functions as a creative consultant for many churches. She has led worship for gathering of over 50,000 poeple and has written the book Trend which looks at culture and creativity. Sue has released three worship albums.
Two ways to participate:

Weekend Modules alone
For those not wanting college credit, the four modules can be taken by themselves for $99 each, or $299 for all four. The four weekend modules will be taught Friday evenings from 6:30pm-9:30pm and Saturdays from 9:00am-4:00pm.
